About Katie

My journalism career began at age five when I’d spend the majority of my time interviewing neighbors with my clenched fist as a mic and my Dad following close behind with his Betamax video recorder. I felt destined to be a storyteller.

That thought followed me to Michigan State University’s School of Journalism, and after graduating in 2003, I worked on staff at newspapers and magazines, covering crime, politics and travel. In 2009, my curiosity for topic variety inspired me to go freelance and since then I’ve been reporting on subjects such as business, travel, social justice, body acceptance and animal rights. I’ve had some remarkable career experiences along the way, including holding tarantulas in the Peruvian Amazon, singing the national anthem in front of thousands at a Chicago Cubs’ game and venturing into prisons to interview identity thieves for a book I wrote in 2014

Through writing about business, in particular, I discovered valuable skills to offer companies of all sizes. I bring my journalism/editing/interviewing expertise to organizations as a ghostwriter/strategist. In that role, I help to unearth the human stories within organizations as well as build thought leadership, content and communications strategies that enable the sharing of compelling stories with the world. I also enjoy moderating panel discussions at conferences for my clients.

I am a keen listener with a quick and creative mind, traits that led me to launch my formal brainstorming practice. These days, I enjoy meeting with brainstorming clients for flash sessions (usually 1-2 hours) to quickly generate actionable ideas around specific business challenges.

I live in Bend, Oregon, with my husband, Tyler, and beagle, Lucy. When I’m not captivated by a new project, I’m passionate about hosting discussion salons and creativity workshops in my home, penning a monthly newsletter focused on joy, pain and vulnerability called Rainbows & Shitpiles, traveling, exploring the outdoors, doing yoga, dancing wildly to ‘90s rap and generally not taking myself too seriously (as evidenced by my Instagram videos).
